Weezer - Buddy Holly
To compare and contrast film teaser trailers and music videos, i have analyzed 'Buddy Holly' by Weezer directed by Spike Jonze.
There's no clear narrative throughout, the whole trailer is the band performing in a 'Happy Days' episode. Happy Days is an American television sitcom that originally aired from 1974 to 1984 so it's not possible the band was there as this music video was put together in 1994. No narrative was needed as the main attraction is the fact they're in an episode of a show. The whole video is set in an American diner - the set of Happy Days.
The characters are the band, the audience expect to see them. Also, the original cast of Happy Days are included. This is made possible as special effects are used. Blue-screen is used commonly, the band is layered with old footage, the newer footage edited to make it look like 1974 unrefined picture. Also, the band and cast are in 70's fashion to blend in with the Happy Days cast.
The lyrics of the song 'Buddy Holly' does not match the action. However it does match the fun and happy mood.
There are lots of long shots of the whole band because it's all about them, however there's lots of close ups of everyone. It's hard to tell if they're original footage or recent actors as they're so well edited together.
This is a very successful trailer!
